Hello and welcome to the Coastal Geohazards podcast. I'm your host, Andres Payo. In this podcast, I delve into the pressing issues of coastal erosion and flooding, both in the United Kingdom and around the world. Join me as I explore the causes, impacts, and solutions to these significant challenges.

About Me

I am a geoscientist and the head of the Coast and Estuaries team at the British Geological Survey. I'm also an introvert, someone who has spent a lot of time in the world of ideas. I enjoy exploring those ideas and imagining how the future might evolve under different scenarios. In 2024, I started this podcast, which fits into the categories of science, education, and systems thinking.

Why This Podcast?

This initiative complements my work at the British Geological Survey and is driven by my interest in avoiding coastal maladaptation and the suffering associated with it. The opinions I express on this podcast are my own. With that responsibility and freedom, I have structured the contents of this podcast into different themes organized into three horizons: environment, money, governance, news, ideas, and the future.

The Three Horizons

Horizon One: We will look at the environment, money, and governance, and how these three elements shape what we see in coastal flooding and risk today, and how they might evolve in the future.

Horizon Two: Building on that first system understanding, we will move into the world of news, ideas, and innovations. Coastal flooding and erosion are very active areas of work and research, with many new ideas in newspapers and research that can be overwhelming.

Horizon Three: This combines all these elements, preparing us to explore how the future might actually look. I probably have more questions than answers in this podcast, but my aim is not to fill any knowledge deficit. Instead, I aim to connect things that are normally not connected, and I hope you find that useful.
