About

Get to know
Dr Andres Payo

I am a geoscientist and head of the  Coasts & Estuaries team at the British Geological Survey, and former post doctoral researcher at Oxford and Southampton Universities in the UK and Delaware University in the USA. My science and work falls within the fields of coastal dynamics and coastal system modelling, which is all about understanding the drivers of change and responses of the coastal landscape over time.

My team’s most recent work focuses on anticipating likely changes of the coastal landscape over time scales from days (e.g. storms) to decades and developing datasets and software tools for mitigating impacts and adapting to an ever changing coastal environment.

I am also a person who enjoys navigating the world of ideas and imagining how the future might evolve under different scenarios.

In 2024, I started (hosting and producing) the coastal geohazards podcast. The podcast falls in the categories of Science, Education, and system thinking.

This is an initiative complementary to my work at the British Geological Survey, driven by my interest in avoiding coastal maladaptation and the suffering associated with it.
